Roadmap
How to Become an Airline Pilot
Achieve your dream of becoming an airline pilot with LA Flight Academy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to starting your journey from earning your first certificate to landing a commercial airline job.
1
Earn a Private Pilot Certificate
The journey to an airline career starts with earning your Private Pilot Certificate (PPL). This certification introduces you to aviation fundamentals, including aircraft operations, navigation, and communication with air traffic control. The PPL is your first step toward professional training and qualifies you to fly for personal or recreational purposes.
At LAFA, our PPL course combines flight training and ground instruction to build your confidence and foundational knowledge. This step provides the groundwork for all advanced ratings and certificates, ensuring you’re ready for the challenges ahead.
2
Add an Instrument Rating
The next milestone is earning an Instrument Rating (IR). This allows you to operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), equipping you to fly in low visibility and adverse weather conditions by relying on instruments rather than visual cues. Instrument-rated pilots are skilled in navigation, situational awareness, and decision-making.
At LAFA, our training ensures precision in IFR operations and prepares you for scenarios that are standard in airline operations. An IR is essential for transitioning to commercial aviation roles.
3
Earn a Commercial Pilot Certificate
With your Private Pilot Certificate and Instrument Rating completed, the next step is earning a Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL). This certification raises your skill level to meet professional standards and allows you to be compensated for your flying services.
At LAFA, our CPL program emphasizes advanced maneuvers, complex aircraft operations, and professionalism in aviation. This certificate opens doors to roles in passenger transport, cargo, or other specialized aviation fields.
4
Earn a Flight Instructor Certificate
Becoming a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) is a common step for aspiring airline pilots to build the necessary flight hours while earning an income. As a CFI, you’ll enhance your skills by teaching others, deepening your aviation knowledge and communication abilities.
At LAFA, we offer tailored CFI programs that prepare you to instruct with confidence and professionalism. This step immerses you in the aviation community and accelerates your progress toward your career goals.
5
Add a Multi-Engine Rating
To advance in your career, a Multi-Engine Rating (ME) is essential. This rating qualifies you to fly aircraft with more than one engine, a requirement for most commercial airline roles. It also prepares you for handling complex scenarios, such as engine failures.
Our multi-engine training focuses on precision, safety, and operational excellence. Adding this rating is a key step toward airline readiness, as it enhances your credentials and broadens your career opportunities.
6
Build Experience & Prepare for Airline Interviews
After obtaining the required certificates and ratings, it’s time to gain flight experience. Airlines typically require 1,500 hours of flight time for an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate. Many pilots build hours through instructing, banner towing, or other commercial roles.
When you reach 500-1,500 hours, you can start interviewing with airlines. These interviews evaluate your technical knowledge and fit within the airline’s culture. Success at this stage leads to conditional job offers and formal training for your airline career.
7
Start Your Airline Career
Once you meet the ATP requirements, you can begin your career as a First Officer at a regional airline. This role provides hands-on experience in the airline environment, preparing you for future advancement to larger aircraft and major airlines.
With continued training and experience, you’ll achieve your dream of flying for a commercial airline, paving the way for a rewarding aviation career.
